![]() Deprivation of REM sleep can result in anxiety, irritability, hallucinations, and difficulty concentrating. REM sleep typically comprises a smaller proportion of sleep time, and is most known for being when dreams or nightmares usually occur. During slow-wave sleep, growth hormone is also secreted, which is particularly important for human development. During this period, body temperature and heart rate fall, and the brain uses far less energy, while restoring its supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule used for the storage and transport of energy. Non-REM sleep begins, eventually moving into slow-wave sleep, or deep sleep. Typically, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep over a period of 90 minutes on average, and should occur 4-6 times in a good night's sleep. ![]() ![]() Non-REM and REM sleep are two categories of sleep that are vastly different. REM sleep is a type of sleep characterized by a number of aspects, including the eye movements it is named for, virtual paralysis of the body, and the occurrence of dreams. REM and non-REM sleepĭuring sleep, the brain expends significantly less energy than it does when a person is awake, particularly during non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Ideally, a person's sleep cycle follows the circadian clock, but sleep can be affected by numerous factors such as light, social timing (when others are awake, when work is required, etc.), naps, genetics, and more. The traveler then feels that it is either later or earlier than what their body is used to, affecting their sleep. An example of this is jet lag, where the body's circadian rhythm is affected due to rapid long-distance travel, which results in the traveler being maladjusted to the local time. The circadian clock exhibits a regular rhythm that corresponds to outside signals (such as night/day) that can persist even if the outside signals suddenly disappear. Sleep timing is largely based on hormonal signals from the circadian clock. The sleep cycle can be defined as the oscillation between non-REM (rapid eye movement) and REM sleep, which will both be discussed below. For the purposes of this page, sleep will primarily be discussed as it relates to humans. The ability to react to stimuli is one of the distinguishing factors between the states of sleep and wakefulness. Sleep describes a recurring state in which the body and mind are at rest, reducing muscle activity, interaction with surroundings, and the ability to react to stimuli. When counting, please deduct the time taken to fall asleep, which can be very different for different people. Use the Hours Calculator if you would like to find out the number of hours slept when you know what times you woke up and went to bed. A bad night’s sleep is the only thing you have to lose.Use this calculator to compute what time to wake up or go to bed to get a given number of hours of sleep. Osmond joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1970 and grew a mustache to be less recognizable. When the series ended, Osmond continued working as an actor, appearing on “Petticoat Junction,” “The Munsters” and a return appearance on “Lassie.” He appeared in feature films “C’mon, Let’s Live a Little” and “With Six You Get Eggroll,” but found himself typecast as Eddie Haskell. During the final years of the show, Osmond was in the U.S. He was a high school friend of Wally Cleaver, older brother of Theodore “the Beaver” Cleaver, and constantly trying to entice his friends into activities that would get them into trouble. Osmond portrayed Haskell as sycophantic to grownups while making fun of them behind their backs. In 1957, Osmond auditioned for the Eddie Haskell role, which was originally intended to be a guest appearance, but those involved with the show were so impressed with Osmond’s portrayal that the character became a key component of the series throughout its six-season run of 234 episodes. Osmond, a native of Glendale began his career as a child actor with his first speaking part at age 9 in the film “So Big,” starring Jane Wyman and Sterling Hayden, followed by “Good Morning, Miss Dove” and “Everything but the Truth.” He also guest-starred on television series, including “Lassie,” “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” “Wagon Train,” “Fury” and “The Loretta Young Show.” ![]() ![]() It also contains particulate resins for adhesion as well as various alcohols (such as ethanol and 2-propanol) that can damage the feed and barrel in some types of fountain pens. Like inkjet ink, this stuff is based on pigment, not dye, and that means it can and will clog feeds. Various glycols (diethylene, alkylene, etc.) enhance penetration these substances can exacerbate bleeding and feathering in a fountain pen. It frequently uses pigment, not dye, for color, and there are also particulate resins for better adhesion. But there are some very bad things in inkjet ink. This stuff might seem appealing refills are inexpensive, and the colors - especially the ones rated for 70 years or longer - are remarkably permanent. Right at the top of this list is inkjet-printer ink. There are other inks, less obviously troublesome, that you should avoid. The modern plastic feed shown here illustrates the myriad nooks and crannies into which ink can find its way before drying out to clog the works. A layer of pigment builds up and will inevitably clog the feed, the nib, or both. But as the ink passes through the very fine fissures of a fountain pen’s feed and the slit of the nib, pigment particles come in contact with the walls of these passages and are attracted to the surfaces. In a calligrapher’s dip pen any separation of solid components is not a problem because the nib is easy to remove and clean and because there is no feed with hidden passages to clog. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. In theory, the pigment in these inks is so fine that it will remain in suspension under the impetus of Brownian motion in the liquid component of the ink. Calligraphy inks are pigmented that is, they derive their color not from dissolved dyes but instead from finely ground solid matter - like paint. ![]() This is an important point to remember.īAD: Certain manufacturers of artists’ inks and paints, such as Winsor & Newton, market some of their calligraphy inks as being suitable for fountain pens. ![]() Because it’s a solution, fountain pen ink contains no solid matter at all. The solvent in fountain pen ink is distilled water, and the solutes are dyes, wetting agents, and mold inhibitors. The solutes are actually reduced to the molecular level, the same as the solvent, and all the different molecules are mixed up evenly to create a uniform fluid, a pure liquid that contains no microscopic particles of solid material. To the chemist, a solution consists of a fluid in which other substances are dissolved (the solvent), and the dissolved substances (the solutes). This injunction may seem obvious, but it is not quite so obvious as it appears. GOOD: Feed your fountain pen a steady diet of fountain pen ink. ![]() ![]() The symptoms must be present in at least two settings (e.g., social, school, work, or home), and must directly interfere with or reduce quality of functioning. This requires at least six symptoms of either inattention or hyperactivity/impulsivity for those under 17 and at least five symptoms for those 17 years or older. Īccording to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and its text revision ( DSM-5-TR), symptoms must be present for six months or more to a degree that is much greater than others of the same age. The symptoms can be difficult to define, as it is hard to draw a line at where normal levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity end and significant levels requiring interventions begin. Academic difficulties are frequent as are problems with relationships. Inattention, hyperactivity (restlessness in adults), disruptive behaviour, and impulsivity are common in ADHD. Symptoms similar to those of ADHD have been described in medical literature dating back to the 18th century. ADHD was officially known as attention deficit disorder ( ADD) from 1980 to 1987 prior to the 1980s, it was known as hyperkinetic reaction of childhood. ADHD is now a well-validated clinical diagnosis in children and adults, and the debate in the scientific community mainly centers on how it is diagnosed and treated. Topics have included causes of ADHD and the use of stimulant medications in its treatment. These controversies have involved doctors, teachers, policymakers, parents, and the media. ĪDHD, its diagnosis, and its treatment have been considered controversial since the 1970s. Stimulant medications are the most effective pharmaceutical treatment, although there may be side effects and any improvements will be reverted if medication is ceased. Canadian and American guidelines recommend medications and behavioural therapy together, except in preschool-aged children for whom the first-line treatment is behavioural therapy alone. If symptoms persist, parent-training, medication, or psychotherapy (especially cognitive behavioural therapy) can be recommended based on age. The British guideline emphasises environmental modifications and education about ADHD for individuals and carers as the first response. ĪDHD management recommendations vary and usually involve some combination of medications, counseling, and lifestyle changes. ADHD has a negative impact on patient health-related quality of life that may be further exacerbated by, or may increase the risk of, other psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression. The condition can be difficult to tell apart from other conditions, as well as from high levels of activity within the range of normal behaviour. In adults, hyperactivity is usually replaced by inner restlessness, and adults often develop coping skills to compensate for their impairments. About 30–50% of people diagnosed in childhood continue to have ADHD in adulthood, with 2.58% of adults estimated to have ADHD which began in childhood. ADHD is diagnosed approximately twice as often in boys than in girls, and 1.6 times more often in men than in women, although the disorder is overlooked in girls or diagnosed in later life because their symptoms sometimes differ from diagnostic criteria. Rates are similar between countries and differences in rates depend mostly on how it is diagnosed. It affects about 5–7% of children when diagnosed via the DSM-IV criteria, and 1–2% when diagnosed via the ICD-10 criteria. Toxins and infections during pregnancy as well as brain damage may be environmental risks. ![]() Genetic factors play an important role ADHD tends to run in families and has a heritability rate of 74%. The precise causes of ADHD are unknown in the majority of cases. Although people with ADHD struggle to focus on tasks they are not particularly interested in completing, they are often able to maintain an unusually prolonged and intense level of attention for tasks they do find interesting or rewarding this is known as hyperfocus. ADHD is associated with other neurodevelopmental and mental disorders as well as some non-psychiatric disorders, which can cause additional impairment, especially in modern society. In children, problems paying attention may result in poor school performance. ĪDHD symptoms arise from executive dysfunction, and emotional dysregulation is often considered a core symptom.
